Who’s under the bed?
“Who’s under the bed?, The story of a monster who misses his home” is a children storybook that uses playful narratives and compelling visual language to create a design that is an eye-opener for children. The book tells a story about a boy, a cheetah, and how human-animal relationship, around the zoo and animal entertainment industry, can better and worsen one another’s wellbeing.
The brief
How can Witty Design be used to encourage the discontinuation of the inhumane treatment on animals?
How can Witty Design be used to encourage the discontinuation of the inhumane treatment on animals?
The challenge
The topic of animal welfare is sensitive and ethical. The biggest challenge on this theme is walking through the thin line between telling the harsh truth and being careful not to scare off the audience.

The solution
The design needs to create a safe space for children. Use the wit to tone down the violence, to focus solely on the relationship humans have with animals like in the animation “Rang-tan: the story of dirty palm oil”. Focusing on the receptiveness and lightening up the mood brings them closer to the message.
Visual methapor and relatable characters allow the imagination to complete a picture. Delightful twists at the end shift my work from something expected to a surprise, and of course, a surprise always brings out a smile and open the audience’s eyes to the issue.
